In order to make sense of the terrible destruction that has overtaken Syria and Iraq, one must understand the fighting in the context of nation building - a process that has swept the globe since the first nation states were formed out of the American and French revolutions. To understand the future of this region you need to grasp that a new security architecture is being established, in which Iran, Syria and Lebanon are the major powers. They’re known as the Shiite crescent. And this is bad news for Sunnis in the entire region, because they’re losing... Читать далее

Former BBC Russian Affairs Analyst, former Executive Director of Russo-British Chamber of...  · 11 нояб 2016
Its first and foremost aim is to establish Russia's place on the world stage once again. I’m afraid we have to keep going back to Soviet times because there are so many parallels between now and then, when there was trouble in the Middle East. We always knew that the Americans supported... Читать далее

Are safe zones in Syria a good idea?

спрашивает
Fadi Zumot
Director of the Centre for Middle East Studies, Professor at the College of International...  · 9 февр 2017
The idea of safe zones is viable, in the sense that America could create them. America has plenty of money and a big army.  But the military will not like the idea of safe zones, neither will the State Department. Literally, Kurdistan means “land of the Kurds”. Non-Kurdish populations also live in... Читать далее

The long and short of it is distance. Although Cyprus doesn't look very far from Turkey – which is where most Syrian refugees travel to the Greek islands from – there is a very narrow, very short journey that they can take to get to what is considered Greece. The reason why we see so... Читать далее

What does everyone get wrong about Syria?

Emma Nelson

That it still exists. Syria epitomises all that the Sykes-Picot agreement, and imperialism and colonialism, did in the Middle East. It tried to create nation states in a European style when these states don’t exist. We should actually be surprised that these kinds of rebellions and... Читать далее

There's no winning in Syria. But the question of whether the West can work with Assad is becoming more of a reality now that we have President-elect Donald Trump in the United States.  Donald Trump's view during his presidential campaign was quite clear: he said the US's current... Читать далее

There was a moment, which was very embarrassing, when people noticed that some Islamic State schools in Syria were using official Saudi school textbooks – which certainly suggests some proximity of outlook, at the very least, between the two places. But they key difference is that... Читать далее
