Cookie files

What is a cookie?

Attention. Yandex Browser permits cookie storage by default.

Cookies are small files that the browser uses to record data about websites you've visited. Usually websites save cookies in the user’s browser in order to easily “recognize” the user (for example, to avoid asking for their username and password again after the user recently visited a given website).

Using cookies has some privacy risks. For example, if someone else uses your computer, and passwords are saved in a cookie, they will be able to enter your accounts. Someone can use your cookies to find out what pages you’ve visited or discover correlations between various pages you’ve viewed.

Remove or block cookies for all sites.

Yandex.Browser allows you to customize your cookie policy in Settings.

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Privacy section, click Content settings.
  4. In the Cookie files section, set the desired parameters for handling cookies. You can allow the browser to store all cookies, only allow it to save them for the current session (when the session is over, cookies will be deleted), or not allow cookies to be stored at all. You can also block cookies from third-party websites, but this may adversely impact how some sites function.
  5. Click Done.

Delete or block cookies installed by a webpage

You can remove cookies that were previously installed by a specific page, or prevent that page from saving cookies on your computer.

  1. Open the webpage.
  2. Click  or in the right half of the SmartBox. The screen will list all permissions for that page.
  3. Click More info.
  4. Click the <...> cookie files for this site. A window opens that lists all cookies that have been set by the open page.
  5. Select a cookie.
  6. Click Remove or Block.
Note. To allow the page to store cookies again, go to Settings and find the Privacy section. Then click Content settings followed by Manage exceptions in the Cookie section. In the list of pages that opens, select the appropriate page and click the icon to the right of its name.

Delete all cookies

Regularly deleting cookie files reduces the risk of a malicious user obtaining information on your internet activities. In addition, deleting cookies can free up hard disk space (the browser allocates part of the memory for cookies and if you visit lots of different websites this can be quite large).

Note. Deleting all cookies means you automatically exit from accounts on most websites.

To delete cookies, follow these steps:

  1. Click  → Advanced → Clear history.
  2. In the Delete the following list, select the time range you want to delete cookies from.
  3. Select Cookies and other website and plugin data (disable all the other options if you only want to delete cookies).
  4. Click Clear browsing data.
Tip. You can open the Clear history window by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Del (in Windows) or Shift + + Backspace (in macOS).

Redirect loops

If a webpage has a redirect loop, you will see the message "The webpage is not working. The site redirected you too many times."

Remove cookies that were installed by the webpage

  1. Open the webpage.
  2. Click  or in the right half of the SmartBox. The screen will list all permissions for that page.
  3. Click More info.
  4. Click the <...> cookie files for this site. A window opens that lists all cookies that have been set by the open page.
  5. Select a cookie.
  6. Tap Remove.

Allow cookie files from third-party sites

  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Privacy section, click Content settings.
  4. In the Cookies section, clear the option Block third-party cookies and site data.

Site is not functioning

A site may stop working after you block cookies. For example, notifications that were enabled earlier may not appear in the browser. If you see the icon on the right side of SmartBox, it means that you blocked cookies on that page.

If you see the sign:

  1. Tap  → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Privacy section, click Content settings.
  4. Enable the Allow local data to be set (recommended) option.
  5. Disable the Block third-party cookies and site data option.
  6. Click Manage exceptions.
  7. Check if the problematic site is in the Cookie and site data exceptions list. If the site is in the list:
    • Click on the name of the site.
    • In the drop-down window, select Allow.
    • Click Done.
  8. Click Done.
