Translate pages, sentences, and words

The translator is enabled by default in Yandex.Browser. If you open a webpage in a foreign language, the browser offers to translate it into your browser interface language. You can also translate individual words or sentences to English without looking them up in a dictionary.

Translate pages

Translate a page to your native language

Yandex.Browser automatically identifies the language of webpages you load and opens the translation panel for pages in foreign languages:

  • If you want to translate the page to Russian, click Translate to Russian.

  • If the browser incorrectly detects the language on the page, you can select the correct one by clicking   → Translate from another language → <name of language>.

Translate the page into a language other than the browser language

After the page is translated, the user can choose a different language to translate the page into. This is useful if you need to translate a page into a language other than your native one.

To translate a page:

  1. Translate the page to your native language.
  2. Click  → Translate from another language → <name of language>.

Disable page translator

If you do not want the translation bar to appear for foreign-language pages:

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, disable the Offer to translate pages that aren't in the same language as the interface option.

How to prevent page translations

You can also disable translation for specific foreign languages:

  1. Go to any page in the language that you don't want the browser to translate.
  2. Click   → Never translate from <name of language> .

If you disabled page translation for a specific language earlier and now want to re-enable it:

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, click Language settings.
  4. Choose the appropriate language and enable the Offer to translate pages in this language option.
  5. Click Done.

Translate sentences and words

Yandex.Browser can translate separate words or sentences on a page into Russian. To see a translation of a word or phrase, just highlight it.

What to do if the page translator isn't working

The translator is enabled by default in the browser. Make sure that you have not turned off the translator manually:

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, the Offer to translate pages that aren't in the same language as the interface and Offer to translate words and phrases when selected options should be selected.

The translation function may not work if you declined the option to translate that page during an earlier session. In this case:

  1. Right-click on the page.
  2. In the context menu, select Translate to English.

Change your browser language

To change the Yandex.Browser interface language:

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, click Language settings.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In the Add language window, select the language and click OK.
  6. In the list of available languages, select a language and click Display Yandex.Browser in this language.
Note. If you want a webpages to display in a language other than the interface language, click Set as default language.

Check spelling in a foreign language

The browser checks spelling in text entry forms (for example, when you're writing an email).

Enable a spellchecker for a language using a built-in dictionary
  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, click Language settings.
  4. Click the language.
  5. On the right side of the language list, enable the Check spelling in this language option.
  6. Click Done.
Enable a spellchecker for a language using your own dictionary
  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, click Language settings.
  4. Click the language.
  5. Enable the Enable spell checking option below the language list.
  6. Click Done.
Attention. If you enable a personal dictionary, the built-in dictionary will not be used for spell-checking.
Add a word to your custom dictionary
  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, click Language settings.
  4. Click the language.
  5. Make sure that the Enable spell checking option is checked below the language list.
  6. Click Custom spell check dictionary.
  7. In the Add word field, enter your word.
  8. Click Done.

Disable word and phrase translation

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Languages section, disable the Offer to translate words and phrases when selected and Translate a word by pointing the cursor at it and pushing the Shift key options.
