How can I disable the browser update in the background?

Classic Yandex.Browser updates automatically irrespective of whether you use it or not. This is for security reasons: new threats and vulnerabilities constantly arise in the internet and the browser gets new and better protection methods.

We do not recommend disabling automatic update in the background, but if you need to:

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. In the lower half of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the System section, disable the Update browser even when it's not open option.

Now automatic update in the background is disabled. However, as soon as you open the browser, it immediately checks for updates and will do so regularly in the future when running.

You can't completely disable automatic updates in the browser. We recommend using the latest browser version to get maximum protection against internet threats.

How do I enable syncing?

Attention. If your browser has multiple profiles, make sure you are in your own profile before syncing (otherwise you might mix your settings and data with data from someone else's profile that is currently active).

When syncing, there are two ways to sign in:

Two-factor authentication offers greater account security than traditional passwords (which are complicated, have to be remembered, kept out of the reach of third-parties, frequently changed, etc.) Even if you take all these steps to protect your traditional password, it is still vulnerable to things like viruses that record your keystrokes. With 2FA, protecting your account is much simpler: you just need to remember a four-digit PIN code and have access to a smartphone or tablet where you have installed the Yandex.Key app with your account.

Signing in with a password

To enable syncing:

  1. Click   → Sync.
  2. On the Syncing page, enter your Yandex username and password. If you haven't registered on Yandex yet, click the link Create account in the same window, and follow the instructions.

  3. Click the Enable syncing button.
  4. Click the link Change settings and indicate which settings should be synced.

At this point the browser offers to install the Yandex.Disk app, a service that lets you store files on Yandex servers for free. If you have already installed this app, the browser suggests you turn it on so that you can store browser files on Yandex.Disk.

  5. Click Close.

Two-factor authentication

  1. Click   → Sync.
  2. Open the Yandex.Key app, which you can get from the App Store or Google Play
  3. On the Sync page enter your username and one-time password from the Yandex.Key app.
Note. If you haven't registered on Yandex yet, click the Create account link and follow the instructions. After registering, disable two-factor authentication.
  4. Click the Enable syncing button.
  5. Click the link Change settings and indicate which settings should be synced.

At this point the browser offers to install the Yandex.Disk app, a service that lets you store files on Yandex servers for free. If you have already installed this app, the browser suggests you turn it on so that you can store browser files on Yandex.Disk.

  6. Click Close.
Note. The first time you turn on device syncing, it may take from several minutes to half an hour. The data is downloaded gradually to avoid slowing down the browser.
