Cookie files

What is a cookie?

Attention. Yandex.Browser permits cookie storing by default.

Cookies are small files that the browser uses to record data about sites you've visited. Usually sites save cookies in the user's browser in order to easily "recognize" the user (for example, to avoid asking for their username and password again after the user recently visited a given site).

Using cookies has some privacy risks. For example, if your passwords are saved in cookies and set to autofill, an unauthorized person who got hold of your computer could sign into your accounts on various websites. Someone can use your cookies to find out what pages you've visited or discover correlations between various pages you've viewed.

Set up cookie processing

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. In the lower half of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Privacy section, click Content settings.
  4. In the section with the name of the element you need, click Manage exceptions.
  5. In the Cookie files section, set the desired parameters for handling cookies. You can allow storing cookies, allow saving them only for the current session (when the session is over, cookies will be deleted), or not allow storing cookies at all. You can also block cookies from third-party websites, but after this, the sites might not be able to function properly.
  6. Click Done.

Delete all cookies

Regularly deleting cookie files reduces the risk of a malicious user obtaining information on your internet activities. In addition, deleting cookies can free up hard disk space (the browser allocates part of the memory for cookies and if you visit lots of different websites this can be quite large).

To clear cookies:

  1. Click   → Advanced → Clear history.
  2. In the Delete the following items list, select the time range to delete cookies from.
  3. Select cookies and other site and plugin data (disable all the other options if you only want to delete cookies).
  4. Click Clear browsing data.
Tip. To open the Clear browsing data window, use the keyboard shortcutCtrl + Shift + Del (Windows) or Shift + + Backspace (Mac OS).

Remove or block cookies set by a specific page

You can remove cookies that were previously installed by a specific page, or forbid this page to save cookies on your computer.

  1. Open a page on the site.
  2. Click  or in the right half of the SmartBox. The screen will list all permissions for the open page.
  3. Click the <...> cookie files link for that site. A window opens that lists all cookies that have been set by the open page.
  4. Select a cookie.
  5. Click Remove or Block.
Note. To allow the page to store cookies again, go to Settings and find the Privacy section. Then click Content settings followed by Manage exceptions in the Cookie section. In the list of pages that opens, select the appropriate page and click the icon to the right of its name.
