How to set up workflows in Tracker

Set up your workflows in Tracker and create your first issues.

Step 1. Create a workflow

To get started with Tracker, create a queue: this is a shared space where all your issues are brought together.

To conveniently manage issues, use boards, a visual method to track the status of issues belonging to several queues. Issues on the board are distributed across columns corresponding to different statuses. Managing issue boards in Tracker is similar to working with regular sticker boards: just drag your issues between columns to change their status.

In Tracker, you can create a queue using one of the available templates, or set up a workflow manually.

To create a queue using a template for a specific workflow:

  1. Open the Workflow templates widget on My page and click Select template.
  2. Select the Basic template and click Continue.
  3. Specify the queue parameters:
  4. Click Next.

This will create a queue with a basic set of issue types and statuses and a simple issue board.

Step 2. Create your first issues

Issues are the foundation of Tracker. To improve your workflow, break down your work into smaller issues with clear completion criteria.

Tracker provides multiple ways to create issues. For instance, you can create a new issue right from the board in just a couple of clicks, or you can use the full issue creation form.

Creating an issue on a board

The fastest way to create an issue is to do it from the board. You only need to name the issue. Everything else can be set up later.

  1. To create an issue, click Create issue.

  2. In the window that opens, enter a name for the issue in the Issue name field. Make sure the name is explicative so that the issue is easy to find in the list, e.g.: Find the answer to the ultimate question of life, the Universe, and everything else.

  3. Click Create or press Enter.

The new issue will appear on the board, the queue page, and the Tracker home page in your issue list.

Creating an issue using the full form

Use the full form to set up all the issue attributes you need right from the start.

  1. Click  Create issue in the left panel.

  2. In the top-left corner of the page, select the queue to create your issue in, such as QUEUE.

If you create an issue from a queue page, the queue field is pre-populated.

  3. You will be suggested to fill out a standard form with a pre-configured list of parameters.

    1. Enter a name for the issue in the Issue name field. Make sure the name is explicative so that the issue is easy to find in the list, e.g.: Find the answer to the ultimate question of life, the Universe, and everything else.

    2. Add a description for the issue if needed. Just click Add a description of the issue so the assignee knows what to do and describe the issue in the text editor that opens.

    3. If you need to upload files, click Attach files.

    4. You can also add checkpoints to the Checklist. To do this, click Add item and fill out the form that opens.

    5. On the left-hand panel, enter the relevant issue details, for example:

      • In the Assignee field, assign the issue to yourself by clicking Assign to me.
      • In the Deadline field, enter an arbitrary deadline.
    6. Edit the list of the issue's displayed fields if needed. To do this, click Edit parameter list and specify the relevant parameters.

  4. Click Create issue.

The new issue is ready-to-go. It will appear on the board, the queue page, and the Tracker home page in your issue list.
