Setting up goals, projects, and portfolios

Goals, projects, and portfolios are optional tools when you're getting started. Configure them when you understand that you need them.

When you have many issues, you might want to see not individual issues but rather work streams: what the team is working towards, how close they are to the result, and how large issues are interconnected. Tracker provides three tools for this purpose.

  • Project combines issues from different queues that are worked on to achieve a specific result. In a project, you can track how many issues are completed, how many remain, and whether the team is meeting the deadlines.

  • Goal describes a development strategy or the desired outcome of the team's work. Progress is measured using quantitative metrics. You can link projects, portfolios, and issues to a goal to see what work is being done to achieve it.

  • Portfolio combines several projects by area, team, or product.

When you need a project

A project combines issues from different queues that are worked on to achieve a specific result. This could be launching a mobile app or redesigning a website's homepage.

Unlike a queue, a project is not a permanent workspace but a specific undertaking with established deadlines. In a project, you can track how many issues are completed, how many remain, and whether the team is meeting the deadlines.

For more information about this tool, see Projects.

How to create a project

  1. In the left panel, select Projects and portfolios.
  2. At the top, click Create Project.
  3. The page for the new project opens: you need to fill in the description, set the dates, and add issues. For more information, see How to manage projects.

When you need a goal

A goal describes a development strategy or the desired outcome of the team's work. For example, "Increase conversion by 15%" or "Enter a new market by Q3".

To assess the progress towards a goal, it is broken down into key results. For each key result, you can set a quantitative metric, assign a responsible employee, and set a deadline.

You can also link projects, portfolios, and issues to a goal to see what work is being done to achieve it, which initiatives are already underway, and how far the team has progressed towards the result.

For more information about this tool, see Goals.

How to create a goal

  3. The page for the new goal opens: you need to fill in the description, add key results, select responsible users, and set other parameters. For more information, see How to create a goal.

When you need a portfolio

A portfolio combines projects by product, department, or other criteria. For example, a "Mobile App" portfolio might include projects like "New Onboarding", "Performance Optimization", and "Payment System Integration".

Most teams don't need portfolios when starting out. This tool becomes useful when you have several parallel projects and need to get a high-level view of them: how resources are allocated and where deadlines are approaching.
