Identical titles and descriptions (duplicates)
Unique and informative page titles and descriptions help users find the desired site in the search results and attract attention. If titles and descriptions are duplicated, it hinders users’ navigation. This makes the site less visible in search results.
Where to view
The Summary page displays the number of identical titles and descriptions.
The Indexing → Titles and descriptions page displays the following:
- percentage and number of identical titles and descriptions;
- Groups of pages with identical titles (in the title tab).
- Groups of pages with identical descriptions (in the description tab).
If there's a large number of duplicates detected on your site, a warning appears on the Website optimization → Site diagnostics page.
How to solve the problem
- If titles are generated automatically, diversify their content. For example, add the page number or product description to the title.
- If there are some GET parameters in the URL, use the Clean-param directive.
- If the URL contains both lower- and upper-case characters, add the rel="canonical" attribute or redirect with 301 code to indicate the pages’ address that will appear in the search.
- Follow the recommendations for creating titles and descriptions.
Make changes and wait. The information in Yandex Webmaster will be updated within a week after the indexing bot’s next crawl.
Submit the most important pages for reindexing or set up page crawling with a Yandex Metrica tag. The bot will crawl these pages faster.
