Site quality index

The site quality index (SQI) shows how useful and convenient your site is for users according to Yandex.

The SQI is calculated using data from Yandex services. It takes into account various criteria, such as the audience size, user satisfaction, and the level of trust that users and Yandex place in this site.

X is regularly recalculated. To receive messages about this, set up notifications.

If you want the SQI displayed on your site, add the icon to it.

How is SQI calculated?

The SQIs for the main mirror, secondary mirrors, and subdomains are calculated separately and may differ.

If the site domain names:

  • Are the same, the SQI for the secondary mirror will be same as for the main mirror.

  • Differ, the SQIs for the main and secondary mirrors may be different.

To learn more, see Main address and secondary mirror.

How SQI is calculated
  1. The algorithm for calculating the quality index views all resources as equal.

  2. Yandex reserves the right to change the algorithm for calculating the quality index at any time without additional notification, reset the value, and cancel the indicator in one of the following cases:

    • Violations are found on the site.

    • There are attempts to influence the site's SQI.

Yandex does not comment on the changes in this indicator and provides no guarantees or dates for its recovery.

Find out the SQI of a site

You can find out the SQI of a site:

If you added your site to Yandex Webmaster, information about the SQI is available on the following pages:

  • My sites.

  • Site qualityQuality indicators. On this page, you can also monitor changes to the metric and compare the SQI of your site with the SQI of other sites.

  1. Go to the Site information page. You can also access it from Yandex Search results by clicking to the right of the site you need.

  2. Click the icon to the right of the title.

  3. In the search bar, enter the URL of the site you want to get information about and press Enter. A page with site information will open.

If there isn't enough data available on the quality of a site, a dash is shown instead of the SQI value.

If the site owner has added the SQI icon, the SQI is displayed on the site.

Here's an example of how the SQI icon is displayed:

Add the SQI icon to your site

  1. Open Yandex Webmaster and go to SettingsSQI icon.

  2. Choose an icon matching your site's design.

  3. Add the generated code to the site's HTML code. We recommend placing the icon at the bottom of site pages.

  1. Go to the SQI icon settings page.

  2. In the Domain field, enter your site's address. For example, http://example.com.

  3. Choose an icon matching your site's design.

Why the SQI can change

Changes in the SQI reflect changes in the users' interest in your site. Monitor the change dynamics: if the SQI is declining, there may be issues with the site.

Below are some factors that may impact the SQI changes.

The SQI fluctuations may be seasonal and depend on changes in site visitor preferences. Examples of areas impacted by seasonal fluctuations include selling seedlings, holiday recipes, and selling and installing air conditioners.

To improve the metric:

  1. Compare your SQIs across activity seasons, disregarding the SQI declines during low‑demand periods.

  2. Analyze your competition. To do this, compare quality indicators:

    • If you and your competitors have comparable changes in the SQI, just continue developing your site and preparing it for a new season.
    • If your site's SQI has dropped much more than that of your competitors, the reason for this isn't just seasonal changes impacting your product or service.

Check the quality of pages that users open from search results. The purpose of such pages is to answer user's questions and provide additional information.

For example, for a children's bicycle store, sources of additional information can be:

  • Specific product cards and bike series cards.
  • Selections of models that meet user demands: "tricycles for children from 3 to 5 years old", "children's bicycles with a handlebar".
  • Customer reviews.
  • Comparison of prices and models.
  • Reviews.

To analyze your landing pages:

  1. Use the Yandex Metrica web analytics system.

The following reports will help you analyze pages:

To form hypotheses about user behavior, use Session Replay. To check hypotheses, create goals.

  2. Analyze the search queries people use to search for your site. Check if information on your site pages matches the search queries.

To do this, use the Query statistics tool in Yandex Webmaster and Wordstat.

  3. Compare the pages of your site with the pages of your competitors and determine your competitive advantage.

Make sure that your site is indexed correctly by yandex:

  • The target pages are known to the robot.

Check the statuses of the URLs and track the statuses of pages using the Important page monitoring tool.

  • Important text on pages isn't hidden from indexing.

If important text is put in noindex or noscript tags, it won't be included in the search base. As a result, the user won't find this text using a search query. Here's an example of text hidden from indexing:

    <noindex>Important text</noindex>

  • The site doesn't have duplicate pages.

  • The robots.txt file doesn't contain an error.

To check the file, use the Robots.txt analysis tool. To learn more about the requirements to the file, see Using robots.txt.

  • There are no technical problems with hosting.

To check if there are problems with hosting, use the Server response check tool.

For the indexing bot to learn about changes on the site faster, enable page crawling with the Yandex Metrica tag.

Site content optimization affects the formation of snippets. A snippet may influence the user's decision to go from search results to your site.

To help the search algorithms determine the user queries that match your site correctly, use:

  • The title and H1-H6 tags for titles. Users will find faster the information they need.
  • The description meta tag to describe site pages. Users will see in search results if the site answers their question.
  • Semantic markup for content formatting, for example, Schema.org. Information in the snippet will be displayed in more detail.
  • The title and alt attributes for image design.
  • Human-readable page URLs.

If a site doesn't fit on the smartphone screen and loads slowly, the users leave it.

To check if a site works correctly on mobile devices, use the Yandex Metrica web analytics system:

  • The Devices and Browsers reports contain information about which devices and browsers your site visitors use.
  • In Session Replay, you can see:
    • How site pages are displayed on different devices and in different browsers.
    • How users interact with site pages.

To learn more, see Sites for mobile devices.

To learn what your target audience thinks about your site, you can use survey and testing services, for example, Yandex Surveys.

Questions and answers

Why did SQI drop?

The SQI value is regularly recalculated taking into account many factors, such as the audience size or user satisfaction. During the time between recalculations, these factors may change. Therefore, we recommend improving the site and filling it with useful content. Over time, your SQI may increase.

To learn more, see the articles under Advice for webmasters.

Why isn't the SQI displayed?

Solution

The site address is specified incorrectly in the field.

Check the site URL.

The specified site isn't included in Yandex Search.

If you are the site owner, add your site to Yandex Webmaster. For the Yandex indexing bot to detect your site pages faster, send them for reindexing.

The site has been added to Yandex Search recently, and the SQI isn't calculated for it yet.

SQI is calculated using a special algorithm within one month after the site appears in search results.
