Banner

A banner is a universal unit whose size adapts to the size of the framing container on the page. The unit is available for display on different devices: desktop, mobile devices, AMP pages, and Turbo pages.

The following ad formats can be displayed in a banner:

  • Adaptive Text & Image ads  . The design of Text & Image ads is created automatically using Smart Design technology. The technology determines which ad is more likely to attract the user's attention and builds it from the available modules.

  • Display advertising of different formats: both fixed and adaptive.

  • Video ads.

Example of a banner with Text & Image ads

How to create a banner

  1. In the Yandex Advertising Network interface, go to Ads on websites → Ad units and click New ad unit.

  2. Select the site that you want to create an ad unit for and click Next.

  3. Select the Banner unit type.

  4. Enter a unit name to be used in the Yandex Advertising Network interface.

  5. Set the CPM floor:

    • Maximum revenue: Determine the minimum cost of impressions automatically. With this option, you can effectively fill placements and maximize revenue for the site owner.

    • CPMV floor: Set your own minimum cost per thousand impressions based on a viewability check. The CPMV floor is set in rubles, US dollars, or euros. You can change the floor currency in your account settings.

      Alert

Setting a CPMV floor can reduce the unit fill rate and, therefore, decrease your income.

  6. To place a unit on AMP or Turbo pages, select the appropriate value in the Turbo / AMP field. To place a unit on the desktop and mobile versions of the site, leave the No value.

    Note

The same unit can be placed on the desktop and mobile versions of the site: it will be displayed on all devices. Units created for AMP or Turbo pages can be placed only on AMP or Turbo pages.

  7. If necessary, specify the unit sizes: they will be applied to all formats within the unit. Select one of the options:

    • Adaptive: The unit size is limited only by the size of the framing container on the site. For a banner, you should specify the size of the framing container yourself in the layout of the site and this determines which ad formats can be shown in the unit. For recommendations on how to determine the size of the container, see Configuring unit sizes.
    • Adaptive with limitations: Enables you to set the maximum and minimum values for the unit height and width in pixels. In that case, when ads are selected, both the size of the container on the site and the limitations set in the Advertising Network interface are taken into account.

If the minimum value is not set, the ad for the desktop Floor Ad unit occupies 90 pixels in height and no more than the specified maximum value in width. These are the default values. For all other units: at least 40% of the container in height and 70% of the container in width.

    • Fixed: Enables you to determine the exact unit size in pixels. The unit will only display ads of the specified size (provided that the unit size is smaller than the size of the container on the site).

    Note

When selecting the Adaptive with limitations and Fixed sizes, take into account the size requirements of fixed display advertising ad formats. To display these formats, the unit size must exactly match or exceed the size of the display banner.

For more information about the size requirements depending on the ad format, see Configuring unit sizes.

  8. Customize the border for Text & Image ads and video ads:

    • In the Enable border field, select the value:

      • Auto: The border presence is determined by the Yandex Advertising Network algorithms for each specific impression.
      • Yes: There is always a border.
      • No: There is never a border.
    • In the Border corners field, select the type of corners:

      • Auto: The shape of the corners is determined by the Yandex Advertising Network algorithms for each specific impression.
      • Straight.
      • Rounded.

    Format

    Border and corner properties

    Text & Image ads

    • The border color is gray (#dddcda).

    • If the container takes up the entire width of the window, the border is displayed only at the top and bottom. There are no corners.

    • The border is displayed only if the ad background is white.

    • If the ad image is dark or bright, the border surrounds only the text part.

    Smart banners

    • The border color is gray (#dddcda).

    • If the container takes up the entire width of the window, there are no corners and the border is displayed only at the top and bottom.

    Video ads

    • The border color is gray (#dddcda).

    • If the container takes up the entire width of the window, there are no corners and the border is displayed only at the top and bottom.

    • The border isn't displayed if the video has no extensions or their background is not white.

  9. Choose a theme: Dark or Light. The default option is Light theme. Dark theme units have a different background and color scheme for their text, frame, buttons, and other elements. The selected theme is applied to all ad formats within the unit.

  10. Determine the interscroller settings: if the option is enabled, ads appear smoothly from under the content when scrolling and hide under it using the parallax effect. By default (the Auto option), display in interscroller is disabled.

    Note

If interscroller is enabled, make sure that the transform, perspective, or filter properties aren't applied to the parent elements of the unit when placing it on the site.

  11. Choose how you want to configure ad formats:

    • Use standard settings: When this option is selected, the unit displays all available formats: Text & Image ads, display ads, and video ads. The ad design is determined automatically.

    • Configure the formats: You can disable the display of some formats or change their design:

The main design is Adaptive  Text & Image ads. For this format, you can configure:

      Maximum number of ads

The unit will display no more than the selected number of ads. The exact number is determined at the display time and depends on the size of the container in which the ad unit is inserted.

The method of placing ads in a unit

If there's more than one ad in a unit, you can specify their position:

      • Auto: Automatically based on the container size.

      • From left to right: For horizontal containers.

      • From top to bottom: For vertical containers.

On mobile devices and Turbo pages, ads are displayed in a carousel if the ad unit contains more than two ads and has a left-to-right orientation. If the unit height is less than 200 pixels, one ad is displayed.

In the preview area, you can simulate how the unit will be displayed in different framing containers and on different devices.

      1. Select the device type using the option: desktop or mobile.

      2. Configure the container size in the Container field. You can select a value from the list or set the size yourself by selecting Custom.

      Note

The specified container size is used only to generate the preview area and isn't saved in the unit settings. When placing the unit, specify the container size in the site layout.

Display ads is served automatically based on the unit size.

To disable a format, set it to “Disabled” .

Video ads are selected automatically based on the unit size. The minimum allowed unit size is 320 × 180 pixels, and one of the unit sides should be at least 180 pixels long. Video ads won't be displayed in smaller units (even if the format is enabled in the unit settings).

To disable a format, set it to “Disabled” .

  12. Click Create. A window with the embed code will open. Use this code to place the ad unit on your site.

Once you save the ad unit, it will be assigned a unique identifier (ID). It consists of a product ID (R-A), site ID (site_id), and the unit's serial number.

Alert

You can't place units with the same IDs on the same page of the site. If you want to create another unit with the same settings, find the unit and click Duplicate in the general list of units. A duplicate unit with a new ID will appear.

How to place a banner on a site

The order of placement of the unit depends on the site version:

  1. Get the embed code: in the unit settings, click Get code.

  2. Copy the ad loader code to the clipboard and paste it at the beginning of the site page between the <head> and </head> tags. The loader code is only embedded on the page once and is used to call all units of the Yandex Advertising Network.

  3. Copy the ad unit code to the clipboard and paste it into the framing container in the part of the page where you plan to display the ad. The container and the unit must be located inside the <body/> element.

Note

We recommend copying the code only using the Copy to clipboard button. When copying in other ways, your text editor might truncate or wrap long strings, which might cause the JavaScript code to run incorrectly.

When embedding the code, make sure that:

  • The ad code for the units that should be displayed first is inserted as early as possible.

  • The embed code isn't placed in a hidden DOM node or iframe.

  • The ad on the page isn't blocked by other units and elements.

  • There are no errors related to the embed code in the browser console.

When setting up container sizes, we also recommend configuring dynamic banner adaptability, letting it resize itself flexibly depending on the contents in the unit, the user device, and the site content. Read more in How to use dynamic adaptive ads in Banner.

  1. Get the embed code: in the unit settings, click Get code.

  2. Copy the unit ID from the code.

  3. Place the unit on the page. You can enable automatic placement of ads or place them manually:

    Automatic ad placement
    1. In Yandex Webmaster, go to Turbo pages for content sites → Settings → Advertising.

    2. Select the unit location and click Add next to the desired one. Available locations:

      In-page ad units

An adaptive unit in the page contents that occupies 100% of the width. The unit height depends on its contents: text and image Adaptive  ads can occupy up to 70% of the screen height, display ads up to 300 pixels.

By default, the unit contains a placeholder: a container inside an ad that fills the space in the layout until the adaptive ad is displayed. This will help you avoid offsetting content as an ad loads.

When using automatic ad placement, the number of ads and favorable slots are selected automatically depending on the page length.

      Ad unit above the header

An adaptive banner above the header of the page that occupies 100% of the width and 70 pixels of the height. If you enable the unit above the header and the automatic recommendation feed, the ad is displayed before each new page of the feed. You can only place the Yandex Advertising Network units above the header.

      Recommendations feed

Ad cards that take up 100% of the width and are served in an endless feed on Turbo pages.

      Floor Ad

An adaptive banner that is fixed at the bottom of the page. The ad unit occupies 100% of the width and 100 pixels of height. The unit may contain an Adaptive  ad with an image, title, and description of the ad offer, or a display banner.

    3. Select the YAN ad unit type and specify the unit ID.

    4. If you are placing multiple ad units, order them by display priority using the icon. The order will be taken into account at ad placement.

    5. Save the changes.

    Manual placement
    1. In Yandex Webmaster, go to Turbo pages for content sites → Settings → Advertising.

    2. Under Manual setup, select a location and click Add next to the desired one. Available locations:

By default, the unit contains a placeholder: a container inside an ad that fills the space in the layout until the adaptive ad is displayed. This will help you avoid offsetting content as an ad loads.

We recommend spacing ad units at least 250 words apart.

      Ad unit above the header

An adaptive banner above the header of the page that occupies 100% of the width and 70 pixels of the height. If you enable the unit above the header and the automatic recommendation feed, the ad is displayed before each new page of the feed. 3. Select the YAN ad unit type and specify the unit ID.

    4. In the turbo-ad-id field, set an arbitrary ID, like first_ad_place.

    5. Save changes.

    6. In the RSS feed, specify the placement position of the ad using the figure element. Add the data-turbo-ad-id attribute for this element with the ID value specified in the previous step.

      <figure data-turbo-ad-id="first_ad_place"></figure>

    7. Go back to Turbo pages for content sites → Settings and check the ad display on the sample Turbo page.

      • Delete the layout="fixed-height" parameter.

    4. Paste the code into the site page in the place where you plan to display the unit.

Example of a Floor Ad embed code
      <amp-sticky-ad layout="nodisplay">
      <amp-ad
          width="350"
          height="100"
          type="yandex"
          data-block-id="R-A-123456-1"
          data-html-access-allowed="true">
      </amp-ad>
      </amp-sticky-ad>

    Another type of unit

You can place banners into various types of units in accordance with the AMP documentation requirements.
