Master password

A master password provides an additional level of security for your passwords. The app will request it when you try to open the password vault or enter a saved password in a login form.

Instead of a huge number of passwords from websites, you will only have to remember one master password. Passwords from websites will also be more secure. Access to the vault is locked by the master password, which cannot be stolen, because it's not stored on devices.

Create a master password

  1. On the home screen, tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Tap Create master password.
  4. Enter the master password. We recommend using passwords that are complex but easy to remember.
  5. Tap Continue. To confirm, enter the password again and tap Create master password.

Delete a master password

  1. On the home screen, tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Tap Delete master password.
  4. Enter your current master password and tap Confirm.

Time to lock the password vault

You can change the time after which the browser blocks access to the password vault and requests a master password during an attempt to access it:

  1. On the home screen, tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Tap Access control.
  4. Under Lock access, select one of the following: After restart, After lock screen, or Never.
  5. If necessary, enter your master password to access the storage.

If you forget your master password

If you created a backup encryption key:

  1. When you're asked to enter your master password, select I forgot my password.
  2. Tap Reset master password.
  3. Enter your Yandex ID password.
  4. Re-create your master password.

If you didn't create a backup encryption key, you won't be able to restore access to your passwords.

Backup encryption key

The master password serves to make your passwords more secure, but what if you forget it? The browser has a convenient and reliable way to reset the master password.

The master password is only needed to decrypt the private key, so if you keep a copy of the private key (a spare encryption key), you can extract it and encrypt it with a new master password.

Some password managers suggest that the user prints out the recovery key (in some cases, as a QR code). This approach isn't secure enough, because the printout could be stolen or lost. That's why we store the spare encryption key on your device and encrypt it with another additional key, which we store on the server. You can access the key on the server only after entering your Yandex ID password. It's very unlikely that a hacker could steal all three: the spare key from the device, the key from the server, and your Yandex ID password.

If you forget your master password, you can only restore your passwords if you have a backup encryption key. To create one, you need to enable syncing.

To change your master password, you'll need a recovery key and a special file. It will be created automatically when you enter your master password for the first time and save it locally. That's why even Yandex can't decrypt your passwords.

To restore access, you have to enter the password to your Yandex ID. The likelihood that a hacker could simultaneously steal the key from the server, the file from your device, and your Yandex ID password is very low.

To create a backup encryption key, tap Enable in the window that opens after you create a master password. If your device hasn't synced, enable syncing by entering your Yandex ID password.

Sync passwords

You can sync passwords that you saved in the Yandex app and in Yandex Browser on your computers, smartphones, and tablets. During syncing, an encrypted copy of the password vault is sent to Yandex servers and then to your other synced devices. Simultaneously passwords from your other devices get added to the repository on your current device.

Password syncing is enabled automatically when the syncing option is enabled. Password syncing is disabled if syncing is fully disabled. To only disable password syncing:

  1. On the home screen, tap  (profile picture) → App settings.

  2. Tap Syncing.
  3. Disable the Passwords option.

Disable the password manager

Note

Even if you disable the password manager on your current device, it still stays enabled on your other devices.

  1. On the home screen, tap  (profile picture) → Passwords.

  2. Tap  → Settings.
  3. Turn off Password manager.

Now the app stops saving passwords and inserting them into authorization forms. Previously entered passwords are encrypted and stored on your device. They become available again if you re-enable the password manager.

To do this, go to the settings and enable the option.
